Apple sauce is so easy to make. Babies love it by the spoonful, kids love it with ice-cream or custard (actually, so do adults!), and then it also pairs perfectly with pork.

Ingredients

  • 3 Pink Lady apples, peeled, quartered, seeded and sliced

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 1/2 tbs brown sugar

  • 6 cloves

  • Pinch ground cinnamon (optional)

Method

  • Place the apples, water, sugar, cloves and cinnamon, if using, in a saucepan over a medium heat. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 mins or until apple has broken down and is soft.
  • Use a fork to mash a little to reach the desired consistency. If you like the sauce smoother, you can use a hand blender to blend the apple mixture until smooth.
  • Serve warm or cold as a dessert or side for meats.

Tips and notes

  • Swap the Pink Lady apples for Granny Smith apples. You made need to add a little more sugar as green apples are more tart.
  • Serve with custard or ice-cream for dessert.
  • Serve as a side for pork steaks or a pork roast.
  • Use as a filling for pies or pastries.
  • Decrease the sugar if serving to babies – Pink Lady apples are naturally sweet.
